Horror Openings

The Mummy

Released- 1990
Production Company- Universal Studios
Release Company- Universal Studios
Director- Stephan Sommers

From analyzing ‘The Mummy’s’ opening two minutes I found that the producers and editors have worked together to give the film an interesting opening. With a mixture of mise en scene and editing, and including the camera angles we get a clear understanding of where the film is set and what is happening at the time. The use of props of pyramids, pharaoh statues and the Tutankhamen statue along with people slaving away in the background, gives the audience an impression of being in the country of Egypt and in the deserts of Egypt. A technique that has been used to add to this would be the use of camera angles as the camera has panned across the top and panned down to show what is happening.

We also see with the use of editing and sound that slaves are working away as the sun is rising or setting. As the genre of the film is horror we presume that the sun is setting and going into the night time period. The audience will also notice that the main colours used for costume are gold and blue, which suit the props of statues inside and out. Another impression the film gives to be included within the horror genre is the non diegetic music used when a character is entering a scene. We see that the production of this film has used lots of mid shots and close ups. The reasons for this are to show the emotions and intensity of the happenings in the film.

Sickle

Released- 2007
Production company- Boulevard Entertainment
Release company- Boulevard Entertainment
Director- Paul Gagne

After analyzing the opening two minutes of the film ‘Sickle’ we see that there is not a great deal of happening in this film bar seduction. The opening fades in and we see an old grimy building. This is used through a panning down shot as we follow the building and towards the 4x4 Landover. We hear the noise of the insect a cricket and also hear thunder, both of these have been edited louder to emphasise the eeriness of the situation. The producers have used many mid and close ups to show emotions in the characters faces and into what they are doing. The characters in the scene are apparent to be kissing, and we notice that the sound of this has been edited out.

Once again this can be related to the matter of emptiness and the fact that there is no one around except the two characters shown. We then see the characters brake apart and the scene becomes very sexual and seductive. We see a series of close ups and hear stumbled speech, and the male character feeling breathless as to what he is seeing. Throughout this scene we see that they have stuck to the 180 degree rule to make the editing look professional and contribute for the film to flow and be continuous with the audience seeing both of the characters expressions and reactions.

Sound

The sound will we use will include dialogue from the happenings around us and of that night, we shall also include non diegetic sound which shall include music and heels

Editing

Things to include when editing my film:

• Continuity editing
• Emotions need to be highlighted
• Needs to include transitions fade in fade out and jump cuts
• Input sound effects
• Include 2/3 special effects blood on the knife ECT.

Production Concerns

Sticking to the appropriate age certificate: limit what is shown
Filming and Editing: needs to be continuous and look professional
Needs to compete with current market
Needs to fit its objective and be recognisable to the horror genre
It can not include certain offensive scenes: Racism, suicide

Technical Limitations

There are many technical limitations for us to create our piece, due to this we have to consider basic scenery, sound, costume, location, shoots &filming, editing and original ideas.

To overcome these we will have to scrap one of our original ideas, as we wanted it to be raining, but due to the day we may have to shoot, or effects we will have to use will makes things too complicated because would mean if we were to shoot on a dry day, it would mean being outside with a wet hair and recreating this again perfectly another day, or hoping for a rainy day and shooting, which may cause the quality of film to be poor.

For our scenery, location and costume we shall use basic streets and basic but appropriate clothing for the occasion.
To fix the limitation of shooting and filming we are hoping we can direct JESSICA’s brother to do some of the filming when both characters need to be in frame.

Location

The location will be in and around the character JESSICA’s house. We will film around the streets of Selston including the streets ‘Sherwood Way’ and ‘Edwinstowe Drive.’ We shall also film in JESSICA’s porch.

Group Dynamics

Throughout the opening of this film JESSICA and NICOLA are the victims, but are almost always together whilst walking home and heading into the door. Whilst they are inside the house, CRAIG is portrayed as to being seen as the ‘hero’ in the situation, this could maybe be linked to ‘PROPP’S THEORY’, as the character who appears to be the good one throughout the film and turns out to be the villain at the end. He is really going behind the girls back and following them, playing with their head. He then takes a shortcut home he is already sat in the house ‘waiting’ for the girls to arrive home so they don’t know the deep truths.

History of horor

Horror movies have long served both purposes. They deliver thrills by the hearseload, as well as telling us stories of the dark, forbidden side of life (and death) - cautionary tales for grown ups. They also provide a revealing mirror image of the anxieties of their time

The first silent horror film was named ‘The Golem’ and was created in and realised in 1915/1920. This was then the followed by ‘The Cabinet of Dr Caligari‘in 1919 which was considered to be ‘The granddaddy of all horror films.
Nosferatu was created in 1922 which the first vampire film was created

EXT. SHERWOOD WAY- EVENING FADE IN

It is late into the evening and NICOLA and JESSICA are walking home from a night out. There is loud music playing in the background which happens to be muffled as they are on drugs and we are seeing it from their prospective. We also hear footsteps and heels clacking the floor.

NICOLA
Oh, My, GOD! I’m off my rocker

JESSICA (laughing)
I know

NICOLA
Are we nearly there?

JESSICA
Yeah! Stop worrying

We then hear someone else’s footsteps very loudly, the camera will pan towards their shoes and then jump cut back to the girls face’s NICOLA is panicking

NICOLA (scared)
Jess. What was that?

JESSICA
Probably nothing you’re too pissed to know your own name

NICOLA (laughing)
Shush, I know

We can then hear NICOLA’s phone and she stops and JESSICA continues walking. We follow jess and we can hear her heels as she is walking away.

JESSICA (angrily)
COME ON NICOLA IM COLD!

NICOLA hurries towards JESSICA, we hear he heels as she is speed walking, they are then approaching the door.

NICOLA
Sorry, it was my mum, checking we had got home ok!

JESSICA attempts to open the door but it appears to be stuck

JESSICA (angrily)
IT’S STUCK

NICOLA
Keep trying

The door finally comes open and we see a male figure stood in the door way in a long black cape and mask, he is stood with knife that id dripping with blood. JESSICA screams

JESSICA
AHHHHH!

NICOLA
Oh my god what was that?

JESSICA
I don’t know but I’m really scared

INT. JESSICA’S HOUSE. EVENING

We the pan back around to the doorway and JESSICA’S brother CRAIG is stood there
